Justin McElroy is notorious for ranking things in British Columbia. The CBC municipal affairs reporter ranks everything from the best beaches to the best municipal flags. Heā€™s now ranked the best doughnuts in Metro Vancouver, and Coquitlamā€™s Doughnut Love was named the 3rd best in the entire region!

ā€œBlink and youā€™ll miss it,ā€ he says about the local shop.

McElroy and some friends narrowed down a list of doughnut shops around Metro Vancouver to 20 locations, and then started ranking them on a 15-point scale:

  • Body (4 points)

  • Flavour (4 points)

  • Joy (4 points)

  • Diversity (2 points)

  • Value (1 point)

In the Elite Tier (the top 3), Doughnut Love got 11.48 points, North Vancouverā€™s Cream Pony scored 12.09 points, and Vancouverā€™s Luckyā€™s Doughnuts scored 12.42 points.

Justin McElroy

Doughnut Love first opened in June 2021, bringing old favourites along with vegan and gluten-free options. It was started by husband and wife duo Clint and Kathy Hiles who left the investment and corporate sales world after nearly 20 years.

Together they started the Doughnut Love with the mission to create a place for locals to come together, experience incredible customer service, and enjoy the best handmade doughnuts around.

Hereā€™s what McElroy had to say about the #3 best doughnut shop in Metro Vancouver:

Blink and youā€™ll miss it: next to a gas station in a nondescript modern strip mall on an endless stretch of Coquitlam suburbia, Doughnut Love doesnā€™t scream out for attention.

But watch the lineup of cars quickly going in and out of the parking lot on a weekend. Then step inside to the store, and look through the window to the kitchen as they churn out 20 different types of doughnuts on a neverending loop.

Then try some of them. Youā€™ll quickly realize that, while only three years old, Doughnut Love might be the best kept doughnut secret in Metro Vancouver.

What impressed us the most? Probably the diversity, quality and uniqueness of the flavours. Doughnut Love does fritters and old fashions, cake and yeast-based doughnuts, gluten friendly and vegan, all at a fairly high quality. And theyā€™re done in interesting flavours with fresh ingredients: an Eggnog BrĆ»lĆ©e or a Coconut Cream Cheese, a Hibiscus or a Lemon Poppyseed. Some things are fairly standard (Apple Fritter anyone?) and some things are over-the-top decadent (thereā€™s currently a ā€œTurtles Old Fashionedā€ covered in caramel and candied pecans).

Prices tend to hover around four dollars, but when you consider the size and freshness, it certainly feels fair.

If we had a complaint, it would be that these are almost uniformly heavy doughnuts: thick in flavour and texture, particularly the yeast-based ones. Getting through more than one would be a chore, and if you covet simplicity, you might find Doughnut Loveā€™s extensive selection a bit lacking.

For the rest of us? Weā€™ve found our new favourite place to load up when we head to the Tri-Cities on the weekend for a Sasamat/Buntzen Lake adventure or Port Moody brewery crawl.

And weā€™ll eat them with love.
